Much of the focus of the efforts of the TCAAF is aimed at young people. Statistics show that young people are particularly vulnerable to HIV/AIDS – partially because of social stigmas around the disease as well as behavioral tendencies. The TCAAF believes that one of the best ways to fight the spread of HIV/AIDS is to give young people the information, skills, services and protective environment they need to make safe healthy decisions. This is why we have focused the majority of our funding and efforts on building a Youth Centre in Providenciales.
Our vision for this youth is to create a place that is safe and fun for the youth, welcoming to everyone, yet also able to offer counseling and other critical information.
The Edward C. Gartland Youth Centre had a soft opening in May 2008 and is operating on a base-line basis until the grand opening planned for the Fall. The centre currently has six buildings (in addition to the caretakers unit), which house a computer lab, games room, meeting rooms, and private rooms for counseling and homework.
In addition to being a place for all young people to go, the Youth Centre will also serve as a headquarters for RapPort, a volunteer youth group in the Turks & Caicos Islands, dedicated to stopping HIV/AIDS worldwide. RapPort is trained in providing education and counseling for young persons between the ages of 13 and 25.
The Edward C. Gartland Youth Centre is centrally located in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, enabling easy access from all areas of the island. To see what they are currently doing – check out the blog by clicking here.
The Centre would not have been possible without the generous support from the local community, and especially the following companies: |
